How to
How to Replace Disc Rotors  [31/10/2010]

Most vehicles made in recent years feature disc brakes on the front wheels and many upscale vehicles feature disc brakes on all four wheels. Disc rotors help provide greater stopping power that ordinary drums lack.

They should be replaced when they start showing signs of wear. You can tell they are worn by simply running your finger over them. If you can feel or see deep grooves that run around the entire surface, the rotors should be replaced.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lug wrench
  • Ratchet and socket set
  • Penetrating lubricant
  • Brake cleaner
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Mechanic's wire
  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel with a lug wrench before raising the vehicle. Do not remove the lug nuts.
  2. Raise the vehicle with a floor jack. Stabilize the vehicle by placing jack stands underneath the vehicle's jack points along the frame. Place wheel chocks behind the wheels that are still on the ground.
  3. Remove the lug nuts and pull the wheel off of the axle. Remove the bolts securing the caliper to the mounting bracket with a ratchet and socket. Pry the caliper off of the rotor and suspend the caliper from a suspension component with mechanic's wire.
  4. Remove the retaining clip or nut if so equipped. Apply a generous amount of penetrating lubricant to the hub and the back of the rotor. Allow the lubricant to sit for a few minutes and tap the back of the rotor with a rubber mallet. Pull the rotor off of the hub.
  5. Use brake cleaner to clean off and wipe down the area where the rotor sat on the hub. Apply anti-seize compound to the hub surface and slide the new rotor into place. Reinstall the retaining clip or nut with a wrench, if equipped.

  6. Compress the piston into the caliper with a C-clamp. Slide the caliper over the rotor and tighten the mounting bolts with a ratchet and socket.
  7. Place the wheel back on the axle and torque the lug nuts with a lug wrench. Remove the wheel chocks and move the jack sides from under the vehicle. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
