Every year, early in January, the automotive world comes to Detroit to show off its wares for the coming year(s). And though some players stayed away during the past couple (lean) years, they’re starting to find their way back and Detroit looks poised to regain its former lustre.

Hyundai Veloster

Hyundai is introducing a compact tall wagon/hatchback and yes, that apparently will be its name. The vehicle looks as if it’s going to be similar in size to the Volvo C30 with a door arrangement similar to that of the Mini Clubman. The design language is reportedly pretty true to the Veloster concept introduced at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show. Power will likely come from the 1.8-litre Nu engine introduced in the 2011 Elantra, though it may get a boost to give it better performance characteristics. The concept was a 2+2 three-door model but there is indication the rear seat may be able to accommodate three passengers, because it seems as if the production model has just one rear door, on the passenger’s side (with the driver’s side looking as if it has a fixed panel behind the driver’s seat) which would make access to the position behind the driver extra difficult if the rear had a fixed console to separate the seats.

Rate: Hyundai Veloster to Detroit Auto Show.
