The HELE package uses a number of new technologies to improve the California’s emissions figures, and is available as an optional extra.

Ferrari says the HELE package is capable of offering an emission reduction of up to 23 percent in ‘real life’ driving conditions compared with the normal California. It does this by using various technologies which improve the 4.3-litre V8′s efficiency, including a stop/start sytem, a new CPU fuel pump control and electronic cooling fan control, and an electronic air conditioning system that does away with the heavy engine-pulley-mounted compressor.

These, along with other minor changes, have allowed engineers to free up 25Nm of torque from the engine, improving overall engine response and usability. The HELE system also incorporates a recalibrated transmission computer which changes shift patterns on the go according to driving styles and demands. If the system recognises the driver is in city traffic, gears will shift up sooner and the stop/start system will be utilised.

Ferrari says emission figures have dropped from 305 grams of CO2 per kilometre to 270g/km, bettering the current model Holden Commodore SS (288g/km), Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo (287g/km), and just shy of the Holden Captiva Series 2 3.0-litre V6 (268g/km). Not bad for a 338kW V8 supercar, a car capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in under five seconds.

The improvements on the California as well as other revisions to the company overall have allowed Ferrari to meet the standards of the Kyoto protocol 10 years ahead of schedule.

The Ferrari California HELE is available as a $2750 option on top of the standard price tag of $459,650.
