Even though there’s been no official word from GM, reports suggest the car’s development is already well underway. Some have even speculated that the variant will be built at GM’s Orion, Michigan production plant, a plant noted for its ability to build multiple models.

In the US, the Chevrolet Cruze is a very popular compact car and last month it was the best-selling vehicle in that segment. According to official VFACTS data, during May this year, the Holden Cruze was also Australia’s third-best selling vehicle overall, behind the Holden Commodore and Toyota HiLux.

If the model is conceived, it would go nicely up against the Kia Cerato Koup, as well as sporty small five-door hatches such like the Mazda3, Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla.

Engine and drivetrain specifications would likely be shared with the existing Cruze sedan range.
