The all-new Hyundai Accent has delivered a surprise at the 2011 Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne.
Hyundai Australia has confirmed both body styles of the new Accent – the four-door sedan and five-door hatch – will go on sale in Australia from August.
Hyundai Australia is keeping specifications of the new Accent close to its chest, refusing to release information about engines, equipment and pricing until closer to its launch.
Globally, the Accent is available with three engines: two petrols and one diesel.
The smaller petrol engine is a 1.4-litre unit that produces 79kW of power and 136Nm of torque. The larger 1.6-litre engine creates 91kW and 156Nm of torque.
Both engines are currently sold in Australia in the Hyundai i20 range, although the 1.4 in the Accent gets an additional 5kW. It is unclear whether both engines will be offered locally, although the larger 1.6 is expected.
The 1.6-litre diesel engine (unlikely to be sold in Australia) produces 95kW and 260Nm of torque.
Pricing remains a secret, but we expect the Accent to be positioned above the i20 and below the Elantra and i30. That would lead to a starting price somewhere between $15,490 and $19,590, before on-road costs.
Hyundai Australia says the Accent will come standard with a “raft of active and passive safety features”, and insists “fuel efficiency and low emissions” were key priorities in the vehicle’s development.
