ust 200 of the limited edition Golf GTI Edition 35 models will be sold in Australia, celebrating the 35^th anniversary of the world’s most famous hot hatch.

Available in Australia only in five-door body style, the Edition 35 model comes with a $3000 price premium over the standard Golf GTI five-door.

The GTI Edition 35 is powered by a detuned version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the Golf R. It produces 173kW of power and 300Nm of torque, which is down from the Golf R’s 188kW/330Nm, but up 18kW and 20Nm from the standard GTI.

Despite the common engine with the Golf R, the Edition 35 retains the standard GTI’s front-wheel drive setup. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while the six-speed dual-clutch DSG is a $2500 option.

Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes just 6.6 seconds with either transmission, making it three-tenths faster than the GTI and between 0.7 and 0.9 seconds slower than the R.

Combined cycle fuel consumption is 8.3 litres/100km for the manual and 8.2 litres/100km for the DSG.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 scores a unique front end with bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights. The LED taillights sit behind smoked lenses, while a glossy black theme is splashed across a number of panels.

The traditional circular five-spoke GTI alloy wheels are replaced by 18-inch ‘Watkins Glen’ rims. Four exterior colours will be available in Australia: Candy White, Tornado Red, Carbon Steel Grey and Deep Black.
