Hydrostatic Steering Systems
- On any car there are many compartments that open and close at will of the user. These compartments can vary from the car hood, doors, trunk, glove box and center-upper consoles.
- How Air Bag Suspension Works
- Using similar mechanical com•- ponents to a piston petrol engine, the diesel burns fuel oil.
- The shape of the combustion chamber in which the fuel/air mixture is burned, has a con- siderable effect on the power output.
Crossf low engines have the inlet manifold on one side of the cylinder head and the exhaust system on the opposite side,
The components that transmit the power—the pistons, con- necting rods and crankshaft— are hidden inside the cylinder block, and the outside of the block and cylinder head car- ries a number of vital ancillary components.
A single-cylinder four-stroke piston engine spends three- quarters of its running time exhausting burned gas, draw- ing in fresh mixture and com- pressing it.
As they are in direct contact with the combustion process, both valves are made from heat-resistant material.
The internal combustion engine in most cars works on the four-stroke principle. This means that to produce one pulse of power the piston must travel up and down the cylinder four times.
Most cars are powered by a piston engine that burns a mix- ture of petrol and air. The mix- ture is burned in a combustion chamber within a cylinder above a piston.
Oil seals and gaskets Oil has a habit of creeping through small openings into areas where it is not wanted and, to contain it, the engine has a number of oil seals and gaskets.
Even new engines sometimes contain small particles of metal left over from the manufactu-ring process, or grains of sand which have not been removed from the crankcase after casting.
On each compression and firing stroke, some combustion gases inevitably escape past the pistons into the crankcase. This is known as piston blow- by. The fumes consist mostly of unburned fuel (hydrocarbons). As an engine wears, piston blow-by increases.
In its simplest form an oil pump consists of two gear wheels meshed together in a tight space so that oil cannot escape past the sides.
